AfL - Sample materials

Offering supportive feedback

This section of the website aims to provide support for teacher judgement through a number of samples of student work across a range of subjects in post-primary junior cycle. The samples have been collected by teachers from everyday work situations. They are not show-cases of exemplary standard; they cover a range of student output, some more successful than others.

Student samples are presented at two levels: medium and high levels of success. These levels of success are in relation to how successful the student has been in achieving the agreed criteria for success. These levels of success are not indicative of higher and ordinary levels of Junior Certificate subjects.

What the examples have in common is that they follow an AfL pattern of teaching and learning which involves these four elements:

  1. Sharing the learning intention for the lesson (what we are learning)
  2. Sharing the criteria for success for the task (how we will judge how successful the student has been in carrying out the task)
  3. Giving feedback linked to the criteria focusing on three aspects of the work:
  • What the student has done well
  • What gaps, shortcomings or errors there are
  • How the student can improve his/her work

While the examples of student work included here come from real students in real school settings, names given are not the real names of the students.

Assessment for Learning in Physical Education

As part of the Assessment for Learning initiative the NCCA, in collaboration with the Junior Cycle Physical Education support service, initiated a project in 20 schools to look at some key issues relating to physical education assessment. The project arose in response to a perceived need for additional support for teachers in this aspect of teaching and learning in physical education. During the project, the teachers trialled and evaluated a physical education planning framework and various assessment instruments for use with the revised JCPE syllabus. Feedback from the teachers was used to refine the materials which are currently being used by the support service in its work. You can download the materials by selecting the links below.
