Flexible Learning Profiles

I know that a one size fits all approach does not suit all students. We need to begin with their needs and give students more choice and ownership of their learning  (Principal, School Network)

Eight schools from the School Network are taking part in a school-based curriculum development initiative that involves exploring the development of flexible learning profiles (FLPs) for senior cycle students. A learning profile is made up of the areas of learning students would choose and how the student would be supported in their learning in those areas. The profile is personalised in that schools would place the students’ aptitudes and interests at the centre of all planning for curriculum provision.

What would be different about flexible learning profiles?

For the students

  • More flexibility and choice
  • More flexible assessment and certification
  • Recognition and reward for different kinds of learning and different skills
  • Greater support for learning
  • A more positive teaching and learning environment
  • Greater student motivation and success
  • Better links to services beyond the classroom
  • Greater use of ICT

Where are the developments now?

Each school has comenced implementing aspects of their thinking and planning for a more flexible senior cycle. We will be reporting on these later in the year.
