Three types of curriculum components are being reviewed or developed at senior cycle: subjects, short courses and transition units.
Subjects
Subjects are designed as 180-hour courses. For the purpose of the review the subjects are grouped together under Arts and Humanities, Science, Mathematics and Languages. Each of these areas is overseen by a Board of Studies. Work at individual subject level is undertaken by the subject course committees.

Draft short courses
Short courses in enterprise and psychology have been developed as first sample courses. A short course is a proposed new curriculum component designed as a 90 hour unit of study. The first two short courses will be available for consultation in October 2009.
Transition units
Transition units are designed as 45-hour courses that will mainly be taken as part of Transition Year. Some may also be taken at other times during senior cycle.

Other courses
These are courses such as Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE), Guidance, and Learning Management which schools offer to students as part of their senior cycle education, but not for formal examination and certification.
