Mathematics

Leaving Certificate Mathematics is being revised as part of the wider review of post-primary mathematics education. The main feature of this review is an increased emphasis on the development of mathematical and problem-solving skills and on using appropriate contexts and applications of mathematics that will enable students to grasp the underlying concepts. This changed emphasis will be reflected in changed approaches to the teaching, learning and assessment of mathematics.

Based on research, and following a period of consultation on the issues involved, proposals have been put forward for developing post-primary mathematics education. Project Maths is due to get under way in the autumn and involves a phased approach to the developments in mathematics at both junior cycle and senior cycle.
